An excellent piece on the A-10 from the view of the pilots themselves, JTACs and infantry. Makes me sad that we don’t have a dedicated replacement in the works.

The battlefield need that predicated the development of the A-10 was the proliferation of tank columns in a battle for territory. History has taught us that the A-10 is superb in its ability to destroy armored vehicles and some emplacements. Close air support is its forte. Loiter time over the contested area is measured in hours not minutes like the fighters that are supposed to be tasked with this mission. These qualities alone support the continuation of the deployment of this aircraft.
Simply put, when the enemy stops building and using tanks and armored vehicles then, the A-10 can be retired and not before.
